The history of Anchorage is filled with stories about fascinating people who came to Anchorage during it's very beginnings as a tent city on Ship Creek flats, or soon after.
Their contributions helped create our town.
Some of these early pioneers like Yusuke "Harry" Kimura and his wife Katsuyo offered much needed laundry services. and went on to create more businesses.
Others like AJ "Tony" wendler and his wife Florence built a grocery store, one of Anchorage's first. But like many pioneers, they did so much more. AJ Wendler became very involved in education. And Florence went on to turn their grocery store into Club 25, a business that continues to day in Anchorage.
Other early pioneers were characters.
Joe Spenard brought some of the first vehicles to Anchorage with his City Express service. And he went on to create a road and the beginnings of a town called Spenard.
Some of those early pioneers were notorious.
Jack Marchin first came to tent city to work on the Alaska Railroad, but found a spring out of town in a wooded area where he erected a still and became a bootlegger providing moonshine to the early settlers. He was known locally as "Russian Jack".
Yes, there is an interesting group of early Anchorage pioneers that you can choose from to create your Build A Book.
