Remember going to see movies at the 4th Avenue Theater?
This grand movie palace in downtown Anchorage, Alaska was originally built by "Cap" Lathrup. Construction of the theater began in 1941, but had to be stopped because of World War II. The theater was later completed in 1947.
To many Alaskan's, this beautiful theater is the center piece of downtown Anchorage.
And if you were fortunate enough to have seen movies in this special theater, you remember the following.
As you purchased your tickets in that small ticket booth, it was almost like getting a special invitation to enter a magical place.
And as you held your ticket for the person at the door and walked into the theater on that beautiful carpet, the wonderful aroma of fresh popcorn reminded you that a visit to the concession stand was going to be part of your visit to this wondrous palace.
As you looked around, you saw the incredible Art Deco staircase that carried you to the second floor balcony and the ladies and men's rooms.
Back on the first floor, do you remember those plush, thick curtains you passed through as you entered the main theater auditorium to choose you seat for the movie?
And 4th Avenue Theater goers well remember those incredible murals depicting Alaska and it's rich history. And remember that amazing ceiling featuring the great north star and the dipper?
Then once you took your seat and the curtains began to part, your imagination transported you up to that glorious movie screen where you saw so many movies.
Yes, our precious memories of seeing movies at the 4th Avenue Theater, fill our hearts and feed our souls.
